UNTIGERING BOOK CLUB

a 6-week group discussion integrating

the principles and practices of Untigering

"Untigering has been so therapeutic. On my journey to find resources on how to parent..., I was so happy to find Asian representation through this book. This book was not just for my child, or my family, it was also for my inner child who still is seeking answers and comfort. Through the Book Club, I found individuals who were on similar journeys and we were able to unpack our learnings together even if we came from different backgrounds and experiences. The commonality that bonded us was that we all wanted to do better. And it was awesome to be a part of it. It gave me a lot of hope and encouragement!"

Tina L.

“I want to acknowledge Iris Chen, the fiercely compassionate and brilliant mind behind Untigering. I have relied on her wisdom in my own parenting and unschooling journey, as well as deepened my understanding of generational trauma healing for myself and my clients. Her perspectives have liberated aspects of my misguided perfectionism and outdated fears and I trust that my own kids have and will continue to benefit from her gentleness that I strive to embody.”

Shannon G.

If ever we needed spaces to imagine and practice relating to children with love and liberation instead of control and domination, now is the time.

Through the Untigering Book Club, we will spend 6 weeks together healing from authoritarian, power-over relationships. We will read and discuss Iris’ book, “Untigering: Peaceful Parenting for the Deconstructing Tiger Parent,” learning new perspectives and practices that help us to:

  • humanize children
  • validate children
  • respect children
  • listen to children
  • understand children
  • empathize with children
  • trust children

And what we offer to the young people in our care, we also offer to ourselves.

If you’re ready to restore trust, connection, and peace to your family and beyond, come join us for this space that we will co-create together.

This Book Club is for you if you are:

  • a recovering tiger parent who is yearning to unlearn patterns of conflict, criticism, and control
  • a caregiver of the global majority who is longing for culturally-relevant and trauma-informed parenting perspectives
  • a cycle breaker who is wanting to heal childhood wounds, reparent themselves, and transform future generations
  • a conscious disruptor who is challenging the cultural and societal status quo rooted in power and oppression
  • a collective changemaker who is longing for supportive community with other untigering folks

This is a place for you to connect with others who want to do the work in community.

Meet the Author & Facilitator

Iris Chen

Parent Coach & Founder of Untigering Movement

As a recovering tiger mother, peaceful parenting has never come easily.

My instincts were to suppress emotions, demand compliance,  quash dissent, enforce rules  — just like the way I was trained as a child.

On me, these strategies produced a good, obedient, high-achieving daughter who did everything that was expected of her. On my son, they resulted in emotional meltdowns, violent outbursts, and constant power struggles.

I finally realized something had to change… and it wasn’t my child.

It was me.

So I began untigering

I unlearned parenting tools that were rooted in power and domination. I sought my children’s wholeness, not just their obedience. I grieved the harm that I experienced as a child. I faced the lies, wounds, and fears that had unconsciously driven me.

In reparenting my children, I am reparenting myself.

Now, as a mother, author, activist, and coach, my work centers on healing from power-over relationships and systems through an anti-oppression and decolonial framework. It is my mission to inspire generational and cultural transformation, especially among Asian communities.

Because I have personally experienced the powerful transformation that comes from untigering, I’m so excited to host this series of book club discussions.

Come join me as we dig deeper together.
