Unschooling as Resistance:
A Practice of Anti-oppression & Collective Liberation

For those who care about justice and collective liberation, this one-hour workshop will explore how unschooling can be a pathway to practice resistance against oppression.

We are often told that “education” is a tool for greater freedom. But when we look at the reality of compulsory schooling, we must acknowledge that it is more consistent with systems of oppression than with liberation.

An honest look at the school system reveals its:

  • Lack of consent
  • Lack of bodily autonomy & freedom of thought
  • Suppression of needs
  • Reinforcement of conformity and compliance
  • Punitive strategies to maintain control
  • Unbalanced use of power
  • Biases against those who don’t fit the norm
  • Institutionalization of existing inequities
  • Upholding of supremacist culture and narratives…

I could go on.

Such “education” trains children to be obedient cogs in the capitalistic system but does not empower them to be free people in a free society.

As Audre Lorde reminds us:

“the master’s tools will never dismantle the master’s house. They may allow us to temporarily beat him at his own game, but they will never enable us to bring about genuine change.”

In this workshop, we will dig into how unschooling can be a tool, path, and practice that empowers young people to reject and dismantle unjust systems.

Let us dream together of genuine change and use all our resources to bring it about.

In this workshop, we discuss:

What does oppression feel like?

What does liberation feel like?

The 4 I’s of Oppression & Liberation and how unschooling can be a practice of the latter.
